Chapter 8: Metal problem, a flash of inspiration (please subscribe and recommend)

As for another type of anaerobic composting, it is actually anaerobic fermentation.

Anaerobic fermentation refers to the stabilization of waste through the metabolic activities of microorganisms under anaerobic conditions, accompanied by changes in methane and CO2 production.

In the liquefaction stage, fermentation bacteria mainly work, including cellulolytic bacteria and proteolytic bacteria.

The acid-producing stage is mainly dominated by acetic acid bacteria, and the methanogenic stage is dominated by methane bacteria. They degrade the products produced in the acid-producing stage into methane and CO2 and use the hydrogen produced in the acid-producing stage to reduce CO2 to methane.

Its principle is to use the transformation effect of anaerobic microorganisms to decompose most of the biodegradable organic matter in organic matter, convert it into biogas, and generate biogas slurry.

The advantage is that after converting organic matter into biogas, it is easy to transport and store, has high calorific value, has low combustion pollution, and is widely used.

Of course, anaerobic fermentation requires the use of fermentation tanks.

It just so happened that there was a small fermentation tank in the [organic fertilizer factory] supporting the pig farm. It was the equipment that Wu Siyuan originally bought, but it had not been used a few times.

Back to business.

The compost fermentation method used in this [organic fertilizer factory] on the pig farm is the fermentation tank fermentation method.

The fermentation tank is a brick-concrete structure with a length of 30 to 40 meters, a width of 6 to 8 meters, and a depth of about 2 meters. Several tanks are combined side by side and placed in a closed or semi-closed fermentation room.

The roof of the fermentation room is made of light-transmitting materials to make full use of solar energy.

A ventilation pipe is buried at the bottom of the fermentation tank. After the materials are filled, a high-pressure air supply device is used for regular forced ventilation to maintain good ventilation in the tank and promote the rapid reproduction of microorganisms.

Use a forklift or special fermentation turning equipment to turn over regularly, usually 1 to 2 times a day.

More than 800 kilograms of organic matter were put into the fermentation tank. After about 30 days of fermentation, the temperature gradually dropped from the highest temperature of 70 to 80°C and stabilized, and the material was decomposed.

After the materials are decomposed, experimenters will take samples back for testing.

The results of the laboratory test were not satisfactory. Sure enough, the heavy metals exceeded the standard!

If this problem is not dealt with, heavy metals will follow the food chain and eventually accumulate in the human body.

This is not a good thing.

Heavy metals include mercury, chromium, cadmium, lead, manganese, vanadium, antimony, thallium, etc. If they accumulate in the human body to a certain extent for a long time, they can cause chronic poisoning.

Mercury poisoning can cause damage to the visual nerves in the brain, lead to mental problems, numbness of the limbs, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and renal dysfunction.

Lead poisoning in pregnant women will damage the neural plate of the fetus. After birth, the baby will have mental retardation and congenital shallow cerebral sulci. The elderly will suffer from brain death and Alzheimer's disease.

Manganese poisoning can cause hyperthyroidism in humans.

Vanadium poisoning can cause abnormal cholesterol metabolism; antimony poisoning can damage the skin; thallium poisoning can cause polyneuritis.

It can be said that excessive heavy metals are harmful to human health.

For example, Guiyu Town in Yue Province is the world's largest e-waste village. It handles tens of millions of tons of e-waste every year, and the proportion of mobile phones in it is increasing year by year.

E-waste is dismantled and classified here, and precious metals such as gold and copper are extracted, forming a huge and secret chain of interests that threatens the health of local people.

Every evening at dusk, billowing black smoke rises from the fields in Guiyu. The black smoke was caused by workers burning electronic waste such as electronic boards in order to remove the metal.

According to investigation and sampling by Greenpeace, six hazardous materials including lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polyvinyl chloride plastic, and brominated flame retardants have seeped into local soil and groundwater.

Due to excessive heavy metals, most of Guiyu's surface water and shallow groundwater were undrinkable at that time. In addition, the coverage of tap water was very narrow, so local people had to buy water for drinking.

The concentration of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in the local air is 21.5 nanograms per cubic meter, which is 140 times and 70 times that of Hong Kong and Yangcheng City respectively.

In 2002, when Guiyu’s e-waste industry was developing at a rapid pace, it was reported that “the results of a physical examination of students in a village in Guiyu by the local health center showed that more than 80% of primary and secondary school students suffered from respiratory diseases, and another Five students were diagnosed with blood cancer.

A research report released in 2010 showed that 81.8% of rural children under the age of 6 in Guiyu suffered from lead poisoning.

This is exchanging lives for money, which is sad but helpless, just because everyone needs to survive.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Back to the problem of excessive heavy metals in soil.

This problem has always been a difficult problem in the industry, and the cost of solving it is very high.

Many unscrupulous merchants directly sell organic fertilizers with excessive heavy metals, which is why there are many bad reports.

Wu Siyuan's organic fertilizers will ultimately serve his own industry. If he does not solve the problem of excessive heavy metals, the final use of [Lingquan Brand Organic Liquid Fertilizer] will only backfire on him.

Moreover, it is not only the heavy metals in the organic matter screened out from domestic waste that exceed the standard, but also the heavy metals contained in the purchased chicken and duck manure, or cattle and sheep manure!

These were all reported to Wu Siyuan by the experimenter at the [Organic Fertilizer Factory].

So this problem still needs to be solved.

Wu Siyuan and the experimenters from the [Organic Fertilizer Factory] experimented with various methods. Either the cost was too high or the effect was not good.

Just when he was feeling a little frustrated, Guan Xuelie, who came to check on the pig farm, casually mentioned, Didn't it say that earthworms can eat heavy metals in the soil?

The experimenter immediately said, Heavy metals can accumulate the heavy metals eaten in the body. However, if the heavy metals exceed the standard too seriously, earthworms will be poisoned. Currently, this research is only in the laboratory stage. It is theoretically feasible, and there is no Actual success stories.”

Perhaps there is no type of earthworms that can efficiently enrich heavy metals! the experimenter added. Currently, domestic earthworms are mainly used in the treatment of solid livestock and poultry manure, domestic sludge, bacterial residue and other earthworm composting in terms of pollution control. There are a few applications.”

Oh. Guan Xuelie said softly, disapprovingly.

Wu Siyuan's eyes lit up. He was not good at doing research, but he had a lot of confidence in cultivating earthworms that could efficiently enrich heavy metals and having the [Shennongjiao Space] and [Lingquan Water].

Wu Siyuan returned to Yangcheng and asked his assistant to purchase a batch of [Taiping No. 2] earthworms and deliver them to his private factory in the suburbs.

The place is open, remote and quiet, making it convenient for Wu Siyuan to do things.
